Many times after the loss of a substantial amount of weight, people are left with lax and excess skin on the upper arms. The arms may be disproportionately bulky, and finding clothes to fit may be a challenge. Physical discomfort is not uncommon. In such cases, no amount of diet and exercise can take away the drooping, excess skin and fat. While liposuction can address the issue of excess fatty bulk and fullness, it is not very effective at tightening loose tissues or getting rid of unwanted excess skin. Also, there are many devices and procedures on the market which promise to tighten these loose tissues without surgery, and while in very mild cases the results may be acceptable, the truth is that in cases with significant excess or laxity of the tissues, the results from those procedures are more often disappointing.
A brachioplasty, or arm lift, is a surgery that involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the upper arms to produce a more firm, shapely, and proportionate contour to the arms. The specific techniques and procedures used to accomplish this will be discussed with you during your consultation with Dr. G in San Diego at his surgery center.
During your procedure, which can last upwards of 2 to 4 hours, excess fat and skin are removed from your upper arms with scars typically hidden on the inside surface of the upper arm allowing the comfortable wearing of short sleeve, or even sleeveless, clothing. Layered suture techniques are used to carefully close the area of incision in order to maintain the lift, tightening and smoothing the remaining skin while minimizing the appearance of scars.
Swelling, which is commonly seen after arm lift surgery, may be controlled by compression garments and the use of drains, sterile collection tubes used to evacuate excess fluid. Closely scheduled follow up visits help to achieve an optimal outcome by allowing adjustments based on individual progress which varies among patients. Full healing of the incisions and affected areas may take four to six weeks or even longer.
Arm lift surgery can dramatically change your appearance and the results are permanent, except for a little natural firmness that’s lost with age. The results of a carefully planned arm lift with Dr. G, however, can be immensely satisfying and significantly change your self-confidence and self-image
